Forty-eight hours in, Mike Gansey hasn't said one stupid thing.
TUESDAY · JUNE 9, 2026No. 5
Ten years of this franchise have trained us to flinch at hope. Then the new president of basketball operations opened his mouth, and — against every instinct we have earned — it didn’t hurt.
Gansey took the job replacing Daryl Morey and used his first turn at the podium to say he wants high-character players who actually want to be here — fountains, not drains. Jay Wright stopped what he was doing to vouch for him on X. The résumé backs the talk: since taking over Cleveland’s front office in 2022 he stacked smart role-player depth around a two-guard core and watched the Cavs win 64 games. He also confirmed the only part most of you cared about — Joel Embiid isn’t going anywhere. We have been sold culture in this town a hundred times. This is the first pitch in years that didn’t sound like a hostage video.

BOUGHT IN
Josh Grizzard interviewed to be the offensive coordinator, lost the job to Sean Mannion, and signed on as passing game coordinator anyway. When a guy takes the smaller title just to be in the building, the culture talk stops being talk.

OVERDUE
It’s officially Gansey’s front office now: Elton Brand is out as GM, Jameer Nelson moves up to the No. 2 seat, and Prosper Karangwa re-upped after rival teams came sniffing. Brand held a GM title for three years that nobody could ever pin an actual job to. This was past due.

★ What to Watch
This Week  Gansey said he’s seeing Joel Embiid in a couple of days. First test of the new regime: keep the franchise center healthy, happy, and on the floor.
June 23  The NBA Draft. The Sixers own the 22nd pick out of the McCain trade, and a roster this thin needs it to turn into an actual rotation player.
June 30  Free agency opens. Gansey inherits the worst backup-center situation in the league and a bench that needs rebuilding from the studs.
On the Site  All-Star Week descends on Philly next month, and the Red Carpet Show lands on Independence Mall with free entry.
Trending
The Eagles social team posted “The 1” to throw it right back at AJ Brown.
New England posted Brown in his new No. 1 jersey captioned “The 1,” so the Birds turned around and posted their own No. 1 with the identical caption. After Brown told the New England press he felt closer to heaven once he left Philadelphia, a copycat subtweet is the gentlest response available.

For one quiet June Tuesday the new guy said the right things and nobody got hurt. Enjoy it before the draft hands us something to argue about.
