Welcome to the official, unofficial start of the 2023 MLB season. For those who have been reading The Liberty Line, you already know the few key phrases that we live and die by for Philadelphia sports.

• NBA doesn’t begin until Christmas

• Playoff seeding doesn’t matter

• MLB doesn’t begin until June 1st

• We never see a loss on the schedule

The Philadelphia Phillies have been, well, the Philadelphia Phillies through the first 54 games of the 2023 MLB season. How you want to judge them is totally up to you of course, but if you take a look at where this team was last season compared to where they are this season, you’ll notice almost identical records and statistics.

Reasons for Concern

Rhys Hoskins is out the rest of the year and when you lose that type of power from the right side of the plate, your offense and lineup is completely different.

• Aaron Nola is 4-4 with an ERA of 4.70

• Zack Wheeler is 4-4 with an ERA of 3.60

• Taijuan Walker is 4-2 with an ERA of 5.57

• Not Included - Ranger Suarez

• The Phillies don’t have a 5th starter

Reasons for Hope

Over 55 games this season, Kyle Schwarber is batting a miserable .163 with 31 hits, 13 home runs, 27 RBIs, and 28 runs scored.

Last season in June, Schwarber batted .272 with 28 hits, 12 home runs, 27 RBIs and 27 runs scored over 27 games that month.

Bryce Harper is hitting .315 with 28 hits, 3 home runs, eight RBIs and 18 runs scored in 24 games this season.

Nick Castellanos is batting .290 with 62 hits, 5 home runs, 28 RBIs, and 35 runs scored in 55 games this season.

Trea Turner can’t be THIS bad. He will almost certainly return to the norm. Law of averages, people. Be patient.
