Weekend Rips: Eagles head to Green Bay, 76ers try to stop the skid, Flyers are hot?

It's another beautiful Friday in the Delaware Valley, and football weather has finally arrived. That crisp chill in the air means the football season is well and truly underway. It's my favorite time of year, in large part because my wardrobe is built around it. Layers on layers. Plus, you can drink outside without your drink getting warm too quickly. Oh yeah, and there's Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, Union, and, of course, TEMPLE FOOTBALL to watch. God, I love this shit.
Weekend Rips is your one-stop shop for all things Philly sports heading into the weekend. I’ll catch you up on what happened this week and set the stage for every matchup Friday through Sunday. Toss in top trending stories from the website and what’s happening at TLL HQ, and Philadelphia’s most unhinged weekly column is quite literally the only thing you need to read today. Other than the draft list at your local watering hole, of course.
I've only just recovered from the ungodly sports bender we had last weekend, and I'm ready to do it all again. In fact, I got started last night with a few pints and a quality burger from the best bar in the city. Sadly, I'll have to gatekeep this one from you folks. Only real ones know.
But fret not, you'll have plenty of sports to distract you from the immense FOMO you must be feeling. Make sure you have your beer run done before the weekend hits full swing. It's time to let it rip.
Eagles take on the Packers at Lambeau - Monday @ 8 pm
I understand this isn't technically over the weekend, since it's a Monday night game, but this is Eagles football we're talking about. It was a restful bye week that saw the Birds take the top seed in the NFC without even playing.
The Eagles own the Packers in recent matchups, including their methodical destruction of Green Bay in the Wild Card round last season. With a bye week to continue to build on the improvements in the offense and some quality deadline acquisitions on defense, I'm confident in the win.
My prediction is specifically that Micah Parsons will do absolutely nothing in this game. Banged up o-line or not, he simply will refuse to make a play against his favorite sports team in the whole wide world: The Philadelphia Eagles.
Plus, if you're one of the proud fans making the trip to Green Bay, you'll be spending the weekend there leading up to the game. If you have no idea what to do while you're there, I don't blame you. That's why I've put together my comprehensive Eagles Road Trip Guide so you can hit the ground running in beautiful Wisconsin.
For those of us not making the trip, there are few things better for our weekend than a Monday night game. You have a free Sunday without having to wait a full bye week for your favorite team to play. You can fire up RedZone and sit on your couch for seven hours straight, or you can go out and be a productive member of society.
I think you know which one I'll be doing.
Sixers try to get back on track after two brutal losses against the Raptors and Pistons - Saturday and Sunday @ 7:30 pm, respectively
This has not been the Sixers' week. A brutal collapse against the Bulls, followed by an embarrassing blowout by the Cavs, has brought us fans back down to earth in a hurry. I mean, just look at how historically bad that collapse was. It's literally never been done.
But those two losses have not killed my newfound optimism just yet. The Raptors are 4-4 and have one of the strangest rosters ever assembled in the NBA. The Pistons, on the other hand, are damn good.
I expect a 1-1 split this weekend, especially since they play Detroit in the second leg of their back-to-back. No Embiid and likely no McCain will leave Maxey and VJ to shoulder the load.
Flyers host the Senators - Saturday @ 1 pm
The Flyers looked really, really good last night with a 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators to move to 8-5-1 on the season. Vladar continued to be an absolute beast in net, saving 22 of 23 shots on goal to help propel the boys to victory.
The Senators are, well, not very good at present. I’m confident in a win, but I’ll defer to the experts here. Speaking of which, Philadelphia’s premier Flyers podcast, The Liberty Yell, is back after a hiatus. Hosted by my dear friend and wartime consigliere Chris Stumpo, this show will give you everything you need to know when it comes to the Flyers. Highly recommend a listen.
Union await semi-final opponent
The boys in blue have the weekend off after sweeping Chicago Fire 2-0 to make the semi-finals. Their next opponent will be either NYCFC or Charlotte, and that will be determined on Friday at 7 pm in a decisive Game 3.
State of The Liberty Line:
As usual, a lot is going on in the TLL extended universe. Most notably, we hired an intern for the first time in a long time. In the past, we've shied away from it because, well, a lot of kids these days just don't know how to write. Then it just turns into Drew rewriting their articles.
Fortunately for us, this kid, Ella, can write. Her first blog is already up, and all I had to do was fix a couple of typos. And who among us doesn't make typos? The next step is seeing if she can crack a joke in one of these things. Stay tuned.
Something I've been thinking about recently
There's nothing better than beers and sandwiches with the fellas. I mean that wholeheartedly. It doesn't even have to be a particularly good sandwich, although that absolutely helps.
I was at Bishop's Collar recently with a couple of buddies and had a nice steak sandwich and about five or six pints of Guinness. It genuinely might be the happiest I've been since I started processing emotions as a toddler. So make some time for beers and sandwiches with the fellas soon. You can thank me later.
