Weekend Rips: Eagles host Lions on SNF, Sixers continue NBA Cup quest, Flyers confuse me, Union kick off semi-finals

Happy Friday, you sick puppies. We have yet another jam-packed sports weekend in the Delaware Valley, and I for one can't wait to kick back and do jack squat to catch every minute of the action. The 7-2 Eagles are back in action, the Sixers continue their quest for the prestigious NBA Cup, the Flyers are fun and frisky, and the Union are set to take on NYCFC in the Conference Semi-finals. Hold onto your hats, folks, we're in for quite the ride.
Weekend Rips is your one-stop shop for all things Philly sports heading into the weekend. I’ll catch you up on what happened this week and set the stage for every matchup Friday through Sunday. Toss in top trending stories from the website and what’s happening at TLL HQ, and Philadelphia’s favorite weekly column is quite literally the only thing you need to read today. Other than the draft list at your local watering hole, of course.
The main event of the weekend, though, is Temple Basketball vs. Boston College. I don't make the rules, I just report the news.
Regardless of who you're most excited to watch, this is the perfect weekend to crack open some cold snacks with your friends, family, or even complete strangers. You can make some new friends, strengthen existing bonds, and try to distract yourself from the fact that you just found out the cutie you always see at Trader Joe's has a boyfriend. He's rich, jacked, and a really great guy. Crushing stuff.
So, without further ado, I'm here to prime you for all the matchups this weekend. So strap in, my fellow Philadelphians, it's time to let it rip.
Eagles look to stay atop the NFC vs. Lions - Sunday @ 8:20 pm
The Birds continue their battle against the NFC North, looking to extend Jalen Hurts' winning streak against the division to 10. This matchup comes after an ice-cold slobberknocker against the Green Bay Packers.
I have to say, I almost feel bad for the Lions. They have to come to the Linc in primetime against a team that owns them and their division rivals. I fully expect Jaelan Phillips to have Jared Goff running for his life, and I just don't see a world where our defense gives up more than a couple of touchdowns to an otherwise vaunted offensive unit.
As for the Eagles offense... I dunno man. DeVonta Smith is on pace for a career high in receiving yards, and Dallas Goedert already has a career high in receiving TDs. The question marks remain with AJ Brown and Saquon Barkley, but only one of them is making a fuss about it.
Sixers take on Pistons in NBA Cup Group Stage - Friday @ 7:30 pm
Joel Embiid is missing time again with knee soreness. Color me shocked. I'm not upset about it. I love the guy dearly, but this team needs its best player to compete, especially against a high-energy Pistons team.
As a fan, I see a win here. As an elite basketball analyst, I think the Pistons take this one easily. The truth falls somewhere in the middle. Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe remain incredibly exciting to watch, and I don't expect that to change when they go up against Cade Cunningham and Ausar Thompson.
Flyers hit the road vs. Blues and Stars - Friday @ 8 pm and Saturday @ 8 pm
The Flyers visit the St. Louis Blues on Friday, November 14. They’ll be looking to jump-start momentum and build consistency after a patchy start to the season. A strong road showing could help them climb the standings and inject some confidence into the locker room.
On Saturday, they have a back-to-back away game against the Dallas Stars. Fatigue can become a factor in back-to-back games, so depth will matter, and special teams could swing the result. If they can stay sharp early, the Flyers have a chance to steal two on the road and make it a statement weekend.
Union host NYCFC - Sunday @ 7:45 pm
The Philadelphia Union face NYCFC this weekend in a matchup that should carry plenty of playoff-style intensity even before the postseason arrives. Philadelphia will try to lean on its organized back line and steady midfield to control the tempo at home, while NYCFC brings a more free-flowing attack that can punish mistakes. With both clubs fighting for position and rhythm down the stretch, this one sets up as a tight, physical contest where a single moment of quality may decide it.
I pray to god this Union team can finally win an MLS Cup. We've had too many near misses when it comes to meaningful silverware.
Temple basketball takes on Boston College - Saturday @ 2 pm
I will be in the building for this matchup, and I could not be more excited to watch my beloved Owls in action. This is a Conway family rivalry game as well. My pops, who will be at the game with me, is a Temple man, as am I. Meanwhile, my mom and sister are BC women, so there's a lot at stake.
But you're kidding yourself if you think BC has a chance in this game. Gavin "LeBron Frames" Griffiths is going to run roughshod all over the visiting team. If you've got nothing going on this Saturday afternoon, get your ass down to the Liacouras Center and watch history unfold. Who knows, I might even buy you a delicious, refreshing Miller Lite if you come say hey.
State of The Liberty Line:
We always find ourselves in the middle of a controversy, don't we? Our beloved Derek, Flyers writer and pot-stirrer extraordinaire, published a piece rightfully bashing NHL "journalists" for their irresponsible coverage of Matvei Michkov's early-season struggles.
Because most beat reporters are crybaby losers, they proceeded to cry and complain on the timeline because he hurt their feelings. Little do they know, Derek is out of his mind and simply does not care. And, quite frankly, neither do we.
Something I've been thinking about recently
Why is it that the only things you people read of mine have nothing to do with sports? I write about Japanese women marrying AI chatbots and interstellar phenomena that could bring the apocalypse, and you eat it up. But writing about Moro Ojomo's breakout season gets me nothing. Why?
I get I'm not a football, basketball, hockey, or soccer genius, far from it, but there's some compelling stuff in there. But you little sickos just want people banging robots and spooky space stuff. I'm all for it, but I'm a lot more than just a thought leader in the world of concerning but interesting situations. I contain multitudes.
