Weekend Rips: Sixers kick off NBA Cup, Eagles rest on the Sabbath, Flyers host back-to-back

The Chase continues. It has been a wild week here at The Liberty Line. For starters, every Philly team that played last weekend won, making the City of Brotherly Love a perfect 4-0. Combine some continued Sixers heroics with me being heavily on the Missing Monkey Beat (more on that later), and TLL has found plenty of ways to stay busy during an Eagles bye week. I’m sweating Guinness and burger grease right now, but please bear with me. I’ll get us where we need to go.
Weekend Rips is your one-stop shop for all things Philly sports heading into the weekend. I’ll catch you up on what happened this week and set the stage for every matchup Friday through Sunday. Toss in top trending stories from the website and what’s happening at TLL HQ, and Philadelphia’s most unhinged weekly column is quite literally the only thing you need to read today. Other than the draft list at your local watering hole, of course.
Fortunately for you, my dear readers, Weekend Rips is here to let you know everything going on in the world of Philly sports and beyond heading into the first weekend of November. While the Birds have their day of rest, there’s still plenty to watch, bet on, and drink during this upcoming weekend.
Let’s be real. It’s Friday. You’re not getting any work done and, quite frankly, neither am I (Unless Josh is reading this, in which case, I am busy as hell. I’m up to my eyeballs in invoices to make those sweet sales numbers go up). Regardless of who you are, the weekend is here. Strap in, fellow Philly sickos. It’s time to let it rip.
Sixers kick off NBA Cup action vs. the Celtics Friday @ 7 pm, then head to Brooklyn Sunday @ 6 pm
Two Sixers games in one weekend? And I’m excited about it? That’s the VJ Maxx effect right there.
As far as I’m concerned, these are two more wins for the 76ers this weekend. If you know me at all, you know I love me some NBA Cup action. Considering this team has already beaten the Celtics this season and the fact that it was probably their worst-played game so far, I’m confident in a win. Put Maxe
Brooklyn is, well, Brooklyn. They’re the worst team in the league. They genuinely might be worse than the 2016 76ers. Anything can happen in the NBA, but again, I’m confident in an easy dub.
I’ll be pouring myself a beer or 10 tonight to watch that NBA Cup action and rock my VJ Maxx t-shirt. Available only at The Liberty Line Dot Com. Will I spill some on myself? Probably. After six or seven, my grip strength is like a golden retriever carrying a duck. I’m holding onto it, but one bump could send it flying. And my friends are absolute buffoons.
Flyers go back-to-back at home against the Leafs and Flames – Saturday and Sunday @ 7 pm
The Flyers look damn good, don’t they? Zegras is on fire, and their win over the Predators moves them to 6-3-1 on the season, matching their longest win streak from last year and showing real progress under Tocchet. Their 6-1-0 record at home already surpasses the pace they set a season ago, when it took 13 games to reach that mark
They host the Maple Leafs at home and will look to keep their recent momentum going against one of the league’s top offenses. Toronto’s scoring depth will test Philadelphia’s blue line and goaltending from the start. With Sean Couturier listed as day-to-day, the Flyers will need strong two-way play from their younger forwards.
Philadelphia stays home for the second night of a back-to-back as the Flames come to town. Calgary has struggled on the road this season, giving the Flyers a chance to capitalize if they bring early energy. The key will be avoiding fatigue and maintaining structure through all three periods.
Eagles take their much-needed rest
I know they aren’t playing this week, but their bye week stories still do better numbers than anything Union-related, so here we are.
AJ Brown continues to bounce around the rumor mill, but let’s be serious, he’s not getting traded. The dead cap hit would be too much to bear, plus it’s fucking AJ Brown. You trade for guys like him, not the other way around.
Union look to close out the first round series vs. the Chicago Fire – Saturday @ 5:30 pm
The Philadelphia Union return home Sunday for Game 2 of their first-round series against the Chicago Fire after winning the opener in a dramatic penalty shootout. Andre Blake’s clutch saves helped the Union steal that road win, putting them one victory away from advancing. With the home crowd behind them, Philadelphia will look to close out the series behind its trademark defensive organization and quick counterattack.
That’s all I got. Sue me.
Trending stories at TLL
Will Smith (basically) said “keep our names out of your fucking mouth”
Typically we don’t address this type of behavior but it’s time to get back to our roots. TLL has been the ultimate grudge machine. We have been beaten down, de-platformed, and completely disregarded ever since we started this website back in 2020.
Everyone told us that there were already too many Philly sports websites and we would never make it. Other media outlets laughed at our opinions to the point that we were basically blacklisted from the “group” of websites that wanted nothing more than to see us fail.
Of course, none of that turned out to be the reality of the situation.
The Liberty Line, even without sports to cover for the better part of 2020, turned into a machine. The majority of the “companies” that looked down upon us don’t even exist anymore. We turned down acquisition offer after acquisition offer. We have stayed true to form and have done things our way, while completely bulldozing 99% of the competition.
This experience has certainly helped me in a lot of different aspects of life, and when it comes to my Philly sports teams, it has made me battle-tested, ready to go to war and get into the trenches… against all odds.
